Celebrating Mardi Gras with International Customs

Mardi Gras also known as Fat Tuesday or Shrove Tuesday is a celebration on the eve of Ash Wednesday, commencing 40 days of giving up meat, sweets and indulgences, reflecting 40 days of fasting. Mardi Gras is celebrated throughout the world with cultural customs and traditions.

United Kingdom, Ireland, and Australia – Shrove Tuesday, Pancake Day or Pancake Tuesday.
Brazil – Tera-feira Gorda [Fat Tuesday] – the final day of Brazilian Carnival.
Greece – Apocreas, which means “from the meat”, meat is not eaten during Lent.
Sweden – Fettisdagen – Pancake Tuesday
Denmark – Fastelavn – Bun Day
USA – Mardi Gras – In Catholic and French-speaking parts of the United States.
Germany – Fastnacht – also “Fasnacht”, Fasenacht Fasteloven [Rhine area] or Fasching [Bavaria].
France – Mardi Gras – which means Grease or Fat Tuesday.
Iceland – Sprengidagur – Bursting day.
